What is sorbic acid?

Sorbic acid is a natural organic compound used as a food preservative. It is a colourless solid that is slightly soluble in water and sublimes readily. Sorbic acid is most commonly found in foods, animal feeds, pharmaceutical drugs, and cosmetics.

Foods with sorbic acid

Because sorbic acids controls the growth of yeast and molds, it is widely added in dairy foods as preservative, like cheese and yogurt, dried fruit, fish, meat, pickles, olives, soups, prepared salads, jelly, syrups, wine, beer, soft drinks and baked goods etc.

Is It Safe?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers sorbic acid to be safe for regular food use, Europe also think it is safe, E number is E200.
